Preview:
England faces quite a conundrum with both starting forwards
Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney nursing a broken foot coming
into the tournament. Both might not be ready for the
opener against
Paraguay,
and coach Sven-Goran Erikson would be forced out of the
traditional 4-4-2 alignment because England doesn't have a lot
of depth at the position. The team however has an
excellent midfield with David Beckham, Joe Cole, Frank Lampard
and Steven Gerrard, and a defense bolstered by Sol Campbell,
Rio Ferdinand, and John Terry.
A lot will depend on the health status of the star players for England.
If things go well, the British side will reclaim their elite status and have a
very good chance at recapturing the championship they won 40 years ago.
Result: England's performance 2006 World Cup can be characterized as
tumultuous and disappointing. Even in the games they won England struggled
to find a consistent rhythm. Rooney, Owen, and Beckham battled injury and
fitness problems, and the star-studded supporting cast suffered from problems of
their own.
