Fueled by a fanatical home crowd at the Euro 2004, Greece surprised everyone
as they just kept going and going until they beat
Portugal
in the final
match. So why didn't the Greek squad as much as qualify for the World Cup
in 2006? A dismal showing at the 2005 Confederations Cup foreshadowed things
to come, and 1-0 defeats against
Ukraine
and
Denmark
cemented their fourth place
finish in the qualifiers.
German-born coach Otto Renhagel would have loved to bring the squad to his
homeland, and Greek fans certainly expected continuing success. The 67
year old Renhagel is unsure for how long he will continue coaching, but relishes
the opportunity he's had with the Greeks, "Even if ten years pass, part of
my heart will be Greek."
