Preview: Despites not having any household names on it's squad, Mexico was ranked in
the top 5 in 2005, and is coming off an impressive qualifying campaign, and
victory over
Brazil
in the Confederations Cup. Led by goalkeeper and
captain Oswaldo Sanchez, Barcelona defender Rafael Marquez, and star striker
Jared Borgetti, the Mexican squad is ranked 7th at the moment, and have high
expectations to live up to. Should they advance past their Group D
competition, they'll most likely face either Argentina
or
Netherlands
in an early
showdown.
Result: Despite losing to
Portugal
during group competition, Mexico advanced to the next round with relative
ease. The first round match against
Argentina
was a back and forth affair between the two largest Spanish-speaking countries
in the world. A magnificent 98th minute strike by Maxi Rodriguez ended one
of the best matches of the 2006 World Cup and knocked Mexico out of the
competition.
