Preview: The middle of the road Suisse enter their 8th World Cup competition ranked
37th in the world. Fortunately, their Group G is wide open despite
France
being the heavy favorite. The real showdown will be on June 23 against
Korea, considered by many to be the frontrunner for second place. An
important question for Switzerland will be the fitness of Rennes striker
Alexander Frei who is recovering from groin surgery. There aren't many
other options up front for the Suisse, and they will rely on the likes of
Philippe Senderos, Dianiel Gygax and Johann Vogel to carry the team. The
midfield is the strength of the team and second round aspirations are within
sight.
Result: Switzerland bowed out of the tournament with pride, and
without conceding a single goal during match play. They missed the
quarterfinals by the slimmest of margins, and are now fully focused on hosting
the Euro in 2008.
