Even though their days of dominance were in the first half of the 20th
century, Uruguay is still considered part of World Cup elite. Only 3
other nations have won more trophies than this relatively small country,
obscured geographically and otherwise by it's giant neighbors
Brazil
and
Argentina. In 2006 they will be the only former winner absent from the
finals.
Uruguay's World Cup dreams came undone in 4-2 penalty shoot out loss against
Australia
on November 16th, 2005.
The away-leg elimination was the most
heart-breaking result imaginable, but what really ruined Uruguay's run
was poor early form in the qualifying tournament. Big losses to
Paraguay, Peru and
Colombia in 2004 mitigated a much more successful 2005, and forced the
playoff
against
Australia.
